How to Choose an Electrician: Questions Worth Asking Before You Book

Searching "electrician near me" gives you a page of names and no way to tell them apart. These questions do.

Before you book

  1. "Is the price flat or hourly, and when do I get the number?" You want a firm price before work begins. If it is hourly, ask for a not-to-exceed figure.
  2. "Who pulls the permit?" For panel work, service changes and new circuits, someone must. A shrug here is a red flag.
  3. "What is the arrival window?" Not "sometime Tuesday." A real window, and a call ahead.
  4. "Have you done this specific job before?" Panel changes, EV installs, knob-and-tube rewires and three-phase commercial work are different skills.
  5. "What is excluded from the quote?" Drywall patching, painting, permit fees, disposal. The exclusions tell you more than the inclusions.
  6. "What if you find something unexpected inside the wall?" The answer should be that they stop and talk to you before spending your money.

Red flags

Comparing bids properly

Line the scopes up side by side before you look at the totals. One bid may include a service upgrade the others quietly assumed you did not need. One may include patching. One may include the permit. Once the scopes match, the price comparison means something. Until then it does not.

What good looks like on the day

They call ahead. They cover their boots and put down drop cloths. They explain what they found in plain language and show you rather than just telling you. They label what they touched. They clean up. And if they hit something unexpected, you hear about it before the invoice does.
