A breaker that trips is not broken. It is a safety device doing exactly what it was designed to do, and it is telling you something specific about the circuit behind it. The mistake most homeowners make is resetting it over and over until it finally holds. That is the electrical equivalent of turning up the radio to drown out a noise in the engine.
Overload. The circuit is being asked to carry more current than its rating. This is the most common cause and the least dangerous. A 15 amp bedroom circuit running a space heater, a hair dryer and a window unit will trip, and it should. The tell is timing: an overload trip usually takes seconds to minutes and happens when you add that one last appliance.
Short circuit. A hot conductor is touching a neutral or another hot somewhere. Current goes nearly unlimited and the breaker trips instantly, often with a bang or a flash. The tell is that it trips the moment you reset it, with nothing plugged in.
Ground fault. Current is escaping to ground, often through moisture or damaged insulation. GFCI devices catch small ground faults that a regular breaker never would. Outdoor outlets, bathrooms and anything near water are the usual suspects.
Call immediately, at any hour, if the breaker trips and you also notice a burning or fishy plastic smell, a panel that is warm to the touch, scorch marks on an outlet or switch, a loud buzz from the panel, or visible smoke. Sometimes the circuit is fine and the breaker has simply worn out — thermal elements degrade after enough trips. Other times the whole panel is the issue. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels, both common in Oklahoma homes built between the 1950s and 1980s, have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip when they should. If you have one, an electrical panel upgrade is not an upsell, it is the fix.
The other common story: your panel is full, you have been stacking tandem breakers to make room, and the service was sized for a 1968 house with one air conditioner and no EV. A 100 to 200 amp service upgrade solves the tripping and the capacity problem at once.
Do not replace a 15 amp breaker with a 20 amp one to stop the tripping. The breaker protects the wire, and a 20 amp breaker on 14 gauge wire means the wire can overheat inside your wall long before the breaker notices. This is one of the most common and most dangerous DIY fixes we find.
