Old House Wiring: Nine Warning Signs Worth Taking Seriously

Oklahoma has a lot of housing stock built between 1920 and 1975, and much of it has never been rewired. Some of that old work is perfectly serviceable. Some of it is a genuine hazard. Here is how to tell the difference.

Nine signs worth investigating

1. Two-prong outlets throughout. No equipment ground. Not immediately dangerous, but it means no path for fault current and no protection for anything with a metal case.
2. Cloth-covered wiring visible in the basement or attic. The rubber insulation underneath the cloth becomes brittle with age and heat, and crumbles off when disturbed.
3. Ceramic knobs and tubes in the attic joists. Knob-and-tube. It has no ground, it fails when buried in insulation, and most insurers will not write a policy over it.
4. Aluminum branch wiring, roughly 1965 to 1975. Look for "AL" or "ALUMINUM" on the cable jacket. It expands and contracts at connections, loosens, and overheats at devices.
5. A fuse box instead of breakers. Often paired with 60 amp service, which will not carry a modern house.
6. Warm outlet covers or discolored faceplates. Heat means resistance means a bad connection.
7. Extension cords doing permanent work. A symptom of too few circuits, and a fire risk in its own right.
8. Painted-over or missing junction box covers. Open splices in walls and attics.
9. Three-prong outlets in a house with no ground. Somebody swapped the receptacles without running a ground. It looks safe and is not, which makes it worse than a two-prong outlet.

What each one costs you

Not every finding means a whole-house rewire. Ungrounded circuits can be protected with GFCI devices and correct labeling, which is a code-recognized fix and far cheaper. Aluminum branch wiring can often be remediated with approved connectors at every device rather than replaced. Knob-and-tube generally does need to go, particularly where it is buried in insulation.

A written electrical inspection sorts findings into urgent, recommended and optional, with prices attached. If you are buying, that report is negotiating leverage. If you already own the house, it is a plan you can work through over a few years instead of all at once.

When a rewire is the right answer

When multiple generations of failing wiring are mixed in the same walls, when the panel needs replacing anyway, and when you are already opening walls for a renovation. Doing a whole house rewire during a remodel costs a fraction of doing it into finished walls later.
